Costs

What does a website
actually cost?

The question has a catch: the price you are quoted is rarely the one you end up paying.

A website can cost anything from nothing to tens of thousands of dollars, and the range is not explained by design: it is explained by who does the work. A builder charges little because you build it; an agency charges a lot because they build it; a platform with implementation sits in between because the work is inside the fee. Before comparing prices, compare three things the number rarely includes: who loads the content, who pays for maintenance, and who can change something on a Tuesday morning.

What actually moves the price

Who does the work

This is the dominant variable and the one almost never discussed. Loading a hundred products with photos and specs takes someone days. If that someone is you, it is free and it costs you your week.

What the site has to do

A five-section brochure and a site that charges cards, books appointments and issues receipts are not the same work, even when they look alike.

How much it has to hold

A hundred visits a day and a hundred thousand do not cost the same. Almost nobody needs the second, and paying just in case is the most common overspend in this business.

What the quote leaves out

The apps

On large platforms the plan is the floor. Reviews, multi-language, reporting and subscriptions are separate subscriptions. Over a year the sum often doubles the list price.

Maintenance

A custom site needs updating. That is a monthly retainer or a billable hour, and it shows up in month thirteen, once the project is already paid for.

The per-sale commission

Some platforms charge an extra percentage if you skip their payment gateway. At volume, that percentage can exceed the subscription itself.

Your time

The cost never invoiced and always paid. A cheap site that costs you three weeks of evenings was not cheap.

The middle column describes each option’s cost structure, not a price: prices vary by country, industry and year. The right column says when that option is the correct one, including when it is not us.

What does a website cost for a small business?

It depends almost entirely on who loads the content. With a builder the fee is low and the work is yours —days of loading products, copy and photos. With an agency you pay a fixed project and then maintenance. With a platform that includes implementation, it is a monthly fee with that work inside. Comparing only the headline number leads to the wrong choice.

Why does an agency charge so much more than a builder?

Because it sells people’s hours, not software. A builder sells you the same product it sells a hundred thousand others and spreads the cost across all of them; an agency designs and codes for you alone. Neither is wrong: they are different businesses for different needs.

Is the cheapest site the right one?

It is right while you are testing whether the idea sells. It stops being right once you know the business works: the bottleneck moves from the site to everything around it —customers in a spreadsheet, suppliers in WhatsApp— and a cheaper site touches none of that.
