How do you take
payments in Argentina?
The technical part is the easy one. The decision that matters is whose account the money lands in.
In Argentina you take payments online with Mercado Pago if you sell in pesos to the local market, and with Stripe if you sell in dollars abroad. Both connect to your own site in minutes and both charge a per-transaction fee. What to check before choosing a platform is not which of the two it supports, but whose account it is: if the platform collects on your behalf and settles later, you have an intermediary, a delay and a risk you do not control. If you connect your own account, the money arrives directly and the platform never touches it.
Mercado Pago
The local standard. Cards, installments, transfers and account balance, in pesos. If you sell in Argentina, it is the one your customers already have.
Stripe
For selling abroad in dollars. It requires an entity able to receive money outside the country, so it is not an alternative to Mercado Pago: it is a different thing.
Bank transfer
No fee and no automation: someone has to watch the bank and confirm by hand. It works at low volume and stops working exactly when the business takes off.
Whose account is it?
The question that orders all the others. If the platform collects and settles later, there is an intermediary between you and your money. Connecting your own account removes it.
How long until it clears?
Clearing times are set by the processor, not the platform. If the platform sets them, it is because it is in the middle.
Is there a fee on top of the processor’s?
Some platforms add their own percentage, or an extra one for not using their gateway. At volume, that can weigh more than the subscription.
What if I leave?
If the account is yours, nothing: you keep charging with it somewhere else. If it was the platform’s, you start over with your customers.

Mercado Pago or Stripe?
Mercado Pago if you sell in pesos to customers in Argentina: it is what they already use and it supports installments. Stripe if you sell in dollars abroad. They do not compete; they solve different markets, and some businesses need both.
Is it safe for my site to store my payment keys?
It depends how. A payment key must never sit in a publicly readable table: it goes encrypted, in a table only the server can reach. It is a fair question to ask any provider before handing over a credential.
